Preparation PDF Print E-mail

Preparation is extremely important for delegates to show a good command of the skills needed to be a good diplomat. Good knowledge of the rules of procedure, careful reading of the study guide, awareness of the foreign policy of one’s country, and usage of diplomatic aptitudes are some of the things delegates need to take into account while preparing themselves to attend AMUN.

By the time AMUN starts, all delegates are supposed to be acquainted with the rules of procedure. Therefore, delegates shall devote some of their preparation time to studying them. The general rules of procedure are going to be available through this website, as well as the special rules used by some specific committees, like the United Nations Security Council. Right after registration, all of the committees will review their rules to make sure that everyone understood them clearly.

Reading the study guide is another duty of every delegate. The study guides are filled with information that is essential for the discussions and, therefore, are going to be of great use to delegates. In the study guides, one may find the statement of the question, the bloc positions, the proposed solutions, as well as other sections containing the most important points to be considered throughout the discussions. Going over the study guides, though, is only a starting point for further research on the topics to be discussed.

Knowledge about the foreign policy of the country the delegates represent is comprised among the researches, which go far beyond the study guide. The representatives are expected to learn the history of their states and to get to know their position regarding the debated topics. Moreover, the delegates need to be aware of the blocs to which their countries belong to in the given international realm of the committee. It is important to stress that the same nation may act differently in different forums.

Finally, diplomatic skills are necessary for the delegates to properly act during AMUN. Knowing plenty of information about a certain topic is worthless when the representatives are unable to share their ideas with the committee. Therefore, good speeches, quality documents, and a respectful attitude towards other members of the committee and the chair are expected to be seen inside the rooms. Outside of them, AMUN continuous: coffee breaks, parties, and lunches are also a time during which delegates may exercise their foreign policy.
